We have all heard many arguments against homeschool and online schools. With all the advancements in technology and online learning platforms, most online schools and homeschools still lack opportunity for students to socialize. Parents still worry about isolation and depression of their children. This continues to be a big factor in enrolling in one of these programs. Finally, One online school is doing what they can to change all that.
Online Schools, Connecting Students All Across The World
American High School, an online middle and high school, located in Hollywood, FL is changing the way homeschool and online schools are viewed. This year, American High School has started several student clubs where students are able to talk with, hang out, and socialize with students their age, attending their school, from all over the world. According to Michael Segelnick, Principal of American High School, “We are trying to build a school community where students can still enjoy many of the activities they would at a public school, but in a homeschool or online school environment.”
Students can meet, and interact with other students from all around the world.
American High School has just started a journalism club, philosophy club, art club, fitness club, computers club, and gamers club. “I am so glad they finally did this! I have been at American for 8 months now. These clubs are a great idea. I finally feel like I’m part of a school”, says 9th grader Emily Zuric.

Students Can Chat, Talk, Share Pictures and Music, and Make New Friends.
American High School also has its own social network, the “AHS Hub”, where students can “friend” eachother, chat, share pictures and music, and make new friends. Many students find others in their area and even get together with eachother forming new friendships.
Students feel like part of the school community, interacting with eachother.
Membership in the school clubs has been steadily growing and has received only positive feedback. American High School now has plans to launch several more clubs and school activities. According to Mr. Segelnick, “We are doing an Ethics Bowl this year, and have plans to hold other school competitions. We also hope to have a prom and graduation ceremony in the near future.” If you are worrying that homeschooling or online schooling your child will lead to isolation, you now have another option.
